Education

It has been said that education is the key to freedom and in order to ensure that generations to come share in this freedom, we must do all we can now to strengthen our education system. We have learned that simply throwing money to our nation’s schools is not the solution. Instead, we must continue the policies introduced in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002—policies that value achievement, accountability, local control, and flexibility. Policies that ensure students meet their potential, teachers receive the training they need, and parents have all the information necessary to monitor their child’s progress.
Indiana has been a step ahead of the No Child Left Behind policies with a testing system already in place. Additionally, I have fought to secure federal funding for local schools and educational organizations to ensure that Indiana’s children will have the resources necessary to succeed. Some of those projects include:
• Securing $399,000 for Michigan City Area Schools to improve their elementary and secondary education programs.
• Securing $28,000 for the YMCA of La Porte County youth fitness and physical education program.
• Securing the South Bend School Corporation’s oversight of the area Head Start program. South Bend schools will now be the lead fiscal agent for Head Start and oversee a $5.7 million annual operation grant for the program.
