Hoyer Celebrates Completion of Jetty at Rockhold Creek

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, August 03, 2006

DEALE, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD), Anne Arundel County Executive Janet Owens, and Colonel Peter Mueller of the Army Corps of Engineers-Baltimore District today celebrated the construction of a new jetty along with the raising of the current one at Rockhold Creek in Anne Arundel County.

“This project will maximize protection for the channel and harbor, as well as make it safer for recreational and commercial traffic,” Hoyer said. “Furthermore, the new breakwater and modifications to the existing jetty will prevent boating hazards and mitigate storm damage.”

The Rockhold Creek Jetty Committee, which represents area residents, business owners, and watermen, came to Hoyer and Anne Arundel County seeking assistance to replace a 60-year-old jetty that had deteriorated to the point that it became a hazard to navigation. In 2004, the Army Corps of Engineers recommended these upgrades in order to improve the stone breakwater located off Cedar Point.

“While many had a hand in bringing this project to fruition – most notably the Corps of Engineers and Anne Arundel County – much of the credit for our standing here today is owed to the Rockhold Creek Jetty Committee which remained steadfast in its determination to see this project through.”

In addition to protecting the creek from damage, a new jetty will reduce the dredging need at Rockhold Creek from a six year to a twenty year cycle, a significant savings for taxpayers.

Hoyer has helped secure more than $1 million for projects at Rockhold Creek.

“This fiscally responsible project is a win-win for our community,” Hoyer said. “The new jetty will improve recreational and commercial use of our waterways, while easing the burden on the environment and limiting the impact of foul weather on residents.
