ENGEL HONORS OUR NATION’S VETERANS

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Eliot L. Engel (D-NY) issued the following statement for Veterans Day 2006:

“Today I renew and reaffirm my commitment to our Nation’s 24 million-plus veterans as we commemorate together that eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when World War I ended.  As America finds itself engaged in hostilities, I pay tribute to our troops serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world as they have served our Nation with honor and distinction and will become the veterans of tomorrow.”

“With the Democrats now in the Majority of both the United States House and Senate, it is my hope that we will be able to repeal the Disabled Veterans’ Tax and give relief to those who have given so much to the defense of our country.”  The Disabled Veterans’ Tax forces military retirees with service-connected disabilities to give up one dollar of their pension for every dollar of disability pay they receive.  Congressional Democrats were successful in getting a partial repeal but 400,000 remaining disabled military retirees must still pay this unfair tax.

On this Veterans Day, let us honor the service of our veterans with a New GI Bill of Rights worthy of our grateful Nation.   The New GI bill of rights would improve veterans’ health care, including mental health care, to meet the needs of returning troops.   Our troops, veterans, and the families of those who have given their lives in defense of our country deserve the gratitude, respect and support of the American people and their government,” Engel concluded.
