Senator Santorum Comments on Senate Democrats Blocking the Child Custody Protection Act
September 29, 2006
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today made the following statement regarding the Child Custody Protection Act, a bill to protect children in states with parental involvement laws from being taken across state lines by someone other than a parent for the purpose of an abortion in order to avoid state laws:
“I am extremely disappointed that some Senate Democrats continue to obstruct passage of this important legislation. Over eighty percent of the American people support parental notification laws. By not agreeing to pass this bill, Senate Democrats have exposed how far they have strayed from the beliefs of the American people.
“As the father of six children, I understand that parents have a vital role to play in the lives of their children, especially when their health and safety are involved. Parents have the right and obligation to be involved in the medical decisions affecting their daughters, especially those that could have a long-term impact on the child.
“The passage of this common sense legislation would have been particularly important to Pennsylvania because most of Pennsylvania’s surrounding states have weaker parental involvement laws. The Child Custody Protection Act would have prohibited individuals from taking young girls across our state lines for abortions in order to circumvent the law that the elected legislature of Pennsylvania has enacted and that the great majority of Pennsylvanians support. It is unfortunate that the Democrats stood in the way of enacting this vitally important legislation.”
