The Veterans History Project

There are almost 18 million war veterans living in the nation today, according to U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans History Project collects oral histories, along with collections of letters and photographs, diaries, maps and other documents, from American wartime veterans from WWI to current conflicts, as well as from civilians who worked in support of them.  It collects from all branches of service including the WW II Merchant Marine and the Coast Guard.

The Veterans History Project has nearly 800 Official Partners at the national, state, and local level, and encourages participation from a wide range of veterans’ organizations, military installations, civic groups, youth groups, museums, libraries, historical societies, students and teachers, colleges and universities, among others.

Oral histories and documents collected through this project will be part of the national Veterans History Project Collection at the Library of Congress and at other recognized repositories. For information and updates on the project, go the Web site at www.loc.gov/vets.
