West Windsor, N.J. – Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) today issued the following statement in response to an Iraqi judge sentencing Saddam Hussein to death for the 1982 murder of 148 villagers from the town of al-Dujail, Iraq:
“The Iraqi people are to be commended for bringing Saddam to justice in an Iraqi court. However, today’s verdict was about Iraq’s past. If we truly wish to help the Iraqi people begin a process of national healing and reconciliation, we can best do so by immediately beginning a phased withdrawal of our military forces from the country. Iraqi’s want us to leave and say our departure would help bring an end to the violence in the country, as the U.S. State Department’s own polls of Iraqi’s have shown. It is long past time for us to heed the desires of the Iraqi people. Our withdrawal from Iraq should begin today.”
