Dodd, Lieberman Announce $96K for Public Radio Broadcasting in Connecticut
August 16, 2006

Washington – Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today announced that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has awarded two radio stations in Connecticut the money necessary to help transition to digital radio, which boasts a clearer, CD-quality sound, and will allow the stations to expand and specialize their programming content. The $96,000 will be used to purchase the equipment needed to make the transition and is part of the nearly $8 million Congress authorized to help local public radio stations make the switch to digital systems.

“Local public broadcasting offers listeners a way to keep in touch and in tune with current events, important issues and the community at large,” Dodd explained. “These two stations will now be able to upgrade their service and programming capabilities to better serve their listening audience.”

“Public radio has always been an important institution in Connecticut and these funds will help modernize its infrastructure,” said Lieberman. “We have always been proud of the outstanding programming our state has offered in cultural and social commentary, news shows, and an eclectic music selection. Now these services will more clearly reach a broader population.”

WNMR in Monroe will receive $75,000 and WRXC in Shelton will receive $20,856. Digital technology will significantly enhance the quality and scope of program services offered to listeners and is part of CPB’s effort to help more public radio and television stations adopt this promising new technology.
