Summer - Tuesday after Memorial Day through the end of the first week in August

There are two types of internships in Senator Bond's office - Legislative Intern and Press Intern. The following are some duties that an intern will encounter as either a legislative or a press intern.

Legislative Intern:

  • Drafting letters - Generally one of two different types of responses is given to letter writers: the standard form letter and the special tailor-made or priority letters. The standard letters are often sent in response to constituents who wrote along with thousands of other Missourians on a particular bill or issue. Thus, the standard form letter states how the Senator stands or feels on the subject or explains the bill or issue. A special or priority letter response is sent to those who are writing on a previously unaddressed issue or all casework responses.
  • Attend Hearings/Special Meetings - Interns are often sent to "sit in" on a few hearings or press conferences during the legislative session. These can range from foreign affairs to Senator X's resignation.
  • Distribute "Dear Colleague" letters/Deliver messages - An intern is usually the bearer of hand-delivered messages. A "Dear Colleague" is a letter from one Senator directed to his peers with the purpose of obtaining their support in a particular endeavor.
  • Order Official Documents - As requested by any Bond staffer. These "documents" could include material from the Library of Congress, any federal agency, or a hard copy of a piece of legislation.
  • Facts and Figures Research - Any request from a staffer or constituent involving "how, what, when, where, why or who." Interns are often expected to try to find the answers to these requests using various Congressional information resources.
  • Special Legislative Projects - This could be anything from helping a Legislative Assistant obtain sponsors for a commemorative to looking up and recording every vote the Senator made concerning any given issue.

Press Intern:

  • Press Releases - Assist Communications staff in issuing releases and reports on the Senator's activities and stances on certain issues.
  • News Clippings - Compiles daily news clippings from state and nationwide periodicals involving Missouri happenings and the Senator's activities. Copies and distributes for staff use.
  • Radio Show - Press interns assist the Communications staff in preparing the Senator's radio program.
  • Requests from the Communications Director - Press interns handle any requests or errands needed by the Press section.

Senator Bond also offers internship opportunities in each of his district offices. Interested students should contact the local office concerning application procedures and deadlines.
