College Aid and Tax Assistance in 5th Congressional District

CHICAGO, IL—Through ten weeks of the program, we have helped Chicago-area families obtain $230,790 in tax refunds!  Please check back to see our thermometer surge towards its goal!

                                                                                              

Saturday Mornings from January 28, 2006 until Tax Day, April 15th, my office will be hosting eleven free clinics for college financial aid and tax preparation services for residents of the 5th Congressional District. Over the last three years, with volunteers from the Tax Assistance Program – It Adds Up (TAP), my office has provided hundreds of constituents with help filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms and tax returns.


            What:             Eleven free, confidential tax-filing and FAFSA-completion 
                                    assistance sessions provided by the Tax Assistance Program– It 
                                    Adds Up


            Where:           District Office of Congressman Rahm Emanuel
                                    3742 W. Irving Park Road
 
            When:            Saturday mornings through April 15, excluding March 11
                                    8:30 –11:30 a.m.
 
            Who:              Any family with an income of $38,000 or less is eligible for free tax-
                                    filing help, and any family is eligible for free FAFSA application
                                    assistance
 
Attendees should bring W-2’s and other proof of income, social security numbers of tax-filers and dependents.  Families seeking FAFSA assistance whose income exceeds $38,000 should bring completed tax returns.
 
Authorized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), TAP aids families with incomes of $38,000 or less file for the tax credits, refunds and other tax benefits to which they are entitled.  In addition to tax-filing and FAFSA assistance, the nonprofit service also provides a range of financial literacy services to working families.  To date, 47,000 families have benefited from TAP’s services for an economic impact of $70 million.
