Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35) represents a large part of South Los Angeles, the Westchester community and the diverse cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood and Lawndale. Congresswoman Waters is known for her ability to speak to the needs and aspirations of her constituents as well as people of color around the nation and the world. Recognized as ‘the first lady of South Los Angeles,” her record of leadership, commitment and consistency is unmatched and includes stellar achievements at every level of government.

Formerly the Chair of the 39-member Congressional Black Caucus (1997-98), Rep. Waters has held the influential leadership position of Chief Deputy Whip of the Democratic Party since the 106th Congress and was recently named Co-Chair of the powerful House Democratic Steering Committee. She continues to be a member of the House Committee on Financial Services and the ranking member of its Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity. She also continues to serve on the Committee on the Judiciary.

Congresswoman Waters is relentless in challenging Presidents and Republican members of Congress who attempt to fundamentally alter important social programs such as Community Development Block Grants, Head Start and Social Security -- putting the lives of millions of children and families at risk. She is a respected member frequently in the forefront of debate on critical domestic and foreign policy issues. Currently in the forefront of a movement to save the trauma center at King/Drew Medical Center in South Los Angeles, her legendary organizing skills have resulted in a community coalition that is demanding that the original mission for King/Drew be honored the hospital that carries the name of Martin Luther King.

Empowering youth and giving them a chance at a productive life is where the “rubber meets the road” for Maxine Waters. The emphasis of her work has long been youth—an interest that today extends not only to those in her own neighborhood and city, but across the country and around the world.

A highly sought after speaker, Congresswoman Waters consistently receives national attention for her ability to mobilize, motivate and empower. Her public activities reflect a personal conviction that the secret to rehabilitating society and creating a better future for children lies in strengthening communities and empowering citizens to control their own lives. Whether fighting for resources for the 35th District, addressing the devastating situation in Haiti or demanding adequate health care for the poor, Maxine Waters is and always will be a catalyst for change.
