"Operation Iraqi Freedom"

The first role of the federal government is to provide for the defense of the country. Article I, Sec. 8, of the Constitution sets forth eighteen powers given to Congress, six of which pertain directly to defense and national security. The Congress of the United States, at the request of the President, authorized in 2003 the use of force to achieve U.S. interests in Iraq. I was elected in 2004, and took an oath in 2005 to uphold the Constitution. I believe that part of my duty in that regard is to support our troops in the field, including those in Iraq. The men and women of the United States Armed Forces deserve our thanks and our support – and they have earned it. They have achieved great things in Iraq. A dictator bent on harming the United States with any means has been removed from power. A nation is enjoying, for the first time in decades, free elections. Liberty is coming to Iraq. It was for this reason that I voted in support of the supplemental funding for the troops in 2005, and will support them in the future. Many have called for a detailed exit strategy in Iraq. I believe that such details, if made public, would only embolden the enemy to, in effect, wait us out.
