Transportation
The first major piece of legislation that I went to work after arriving in D.C. in January was H.R. 3, the Transportation Equity Act. I immediately became a co-sponsor the bill, which reauthorizes the federal highway, public transportation, highway safety, and motor carrier safety programs for six years at a total of $283.9 billion in guaranteed funding.
This is very good news for Indiana. Under the bill, Indiana will receive $5.4 billion to put toward transportation and infrastructure projects. That’s a 37 percent increase in the rate of return on federal gas tax receipts over the last six-year funding cycle. The $1.45 billion increase for Indiana is the fourth best increase among the states, and eighth best in terms of raw dollars.
On top of the $5.4 billion Indiana will receive from H.R. 3, was a separate $45 million for specific projects of high importance to the Ninth District. I worked with local officials across the district to identify projects that met the requirements for this special funding. The result is that the state must use the allocated funding on these specific projects. The practical reality of these types of earmarks is that they often provide immediate funding to either jump start or complete a project of high importance.
