The Dallas-area chapter of the LSU alumni association will collect cash and checks for the American Red Cross at its football season kickoff party on Sept. 10. United Methodist churches are collecting donations via offering plates, online or by telephone. The United Methodist Committee on Relief also needs flood buckets filled with cleaning supplies that people use to clean their homes after floods and hurricanes. •The American Red Cross Dallas Area Chapter has set up two shelters: the Samuell Grand Recreation Center, 6200 E. Grand Ave.; and the Grauwyler Recreation Center, 7780 Harry Hines Blvd. The local Red Cross chapter also is seeking donations to help hurricane victims at 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the Dallas Area Chapter, 4800 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, TX 75235, or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013. •The Salvation Army offers a shelter with showers and meals at 5302 Harry Hines Blvd. in Dallas. The agency also is collecting money and bottled water to help hurricane victims. •People seeking social services also can call 211, the free hotline for referrals operated by the Community Council of Greater Dallas.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has established a Public and Indian Housing Resource Information Center, and a toll-free number, 1-800-955-2232, to assist displaced public housing residents and Section 8 voucher holders. Through its 80 field offices, HUD has also provided policy guidance to the nation’s 3,200 Public Housing Authorities on how to assist displaced families as they relocate to other areas. |
