On May 23, Senator Norm Coleman, along with Assistant Secretary of Energy Jeffrey Jarrett, participated in a ceremony awarding Excelsior Energy $36 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to be used in the design and construction of an advanced clean coal plant, which will be located on the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota. The project is expected to create hundreds of local construction jobs during the three years it takes to build the plant and many permanent high-tech jobs when commercial operations commence.

On May 24, Senator Norm Coleman, along with other leading members of the Senate and House, escorted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to the floor of the House to address a joint session of Congress. The friendship of Senator Coleman and Prime Minister Olmert extends back to the days when both served as Mayors of St. Paul and Jerusalem, respectively. At that time, they both shared ideas on how to improve their cities. Now they share an even larger vision of forging stronger ties between the U.S. and Israel.

On Monday, May 15th, Senator Coleman presented Pvt. Ernest Thompson with his second Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the Korean War during a meeting in Coleman’s St. Paul office.   Pvt. Thompson had run into obstacles in receiving the medal, and Coleman and his staff were able to assist in obtaining the well deserved decoration.  Pvt. Thompson had never been officially recognized for either Purple Heart, instead receiving them in the mail.  For the first time, Pvt. Thompson received an official presentation and heartfelt thanks for his sacrifice.  
 
Pvt. Thompson entered into active service with the Army on April 6, 1948, and was discharged on June 17, 1952.  His service in the Korean War earned him two Purple Hearts, the Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars, the Distinguished Service Unit Citation, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

On Friday, May 12th, Senator Coleman met with local farmers and residents following a USDA Check Presentation in the Lake Bronson, located in Kittson County.   After the presentation, Coleman opened up the event for questions and discussion, where he heard from a number of local farmers on the need for agriculture disaster assistance in light of the 2005 storms that devastated Kittson County.  Coleman pledged his continued support for ag disaster assistance funding in the Supplemental Appropriations bill currently before Congress.

On Wednesday May 10, 2006, Senator Coleman met with representatives of Northwest Airlines including CEO Doug Steenland and representatives of the Airline Pilots Association including the Chairman of the Minnesota Chapter, Mark McClain to discuss the pending pension reform conference report. Senator Coleman also commended the Association and NWA for working together to reach an agreement on a new contract.

On May 4, Senator Norm Coleman unveiled energy legislation aimed at reducing our dependence on foreign. The Enhanced Energy Security Act will cut oil use by 2.5 million barrels of oil per day by 2016. Also in attendance were Sens. Bingaman (D-NM), Chafee (R-RI), Lieberman (D-CT), Bayh (D-IN), and Cantwell (D-WA).
