Information For Prospective Interns
Goal: To provide you with a thorough education of the
functions of a Congressional office in Washington, D.C. or in the District-- which we hope to be an
exciting and informative experience.
Job Description:
Clerical. General Office Tasks: Primarily, you will
open, sort and dispense incoming mail, answer phones and run
errands. Admittedly, this may not be the most exciting part of
the job but it is crucial to the efficiency of the office.
Legislative Support: You will work with the
legislative assistants whose legislative areas are of interest to
you. A major responsibility will be providing support to the
legislative staff by attending committee meetings, briefings and
mark-ups. You will be asked to perform in-depth research and
analysis of legislation.
Project work is another task that you will engage in. The
projects vary from compiling district information to developing
information that will be used as a basis for making legislation.
There is a broad range of projects to work on and opportunities
in this area are limited only by your effort and desire.
Constituent Services: In the District, the major area where your impact
can be made is with constituent services. You will act as an ombudsman between constituents and Federal agencies. Constituent information requests are also part of your duties.
Your interaction with constituents will be constant, either by
phone or as they come into the various offices.
Expectations: The most basic requirement is that you
have the ability to interact with people and write well. You will
work from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, or as
your schedule will allow and approved by the Intern Coordinator.
You are also expected to be responsible and politically aware.
Additionally, a sense of humor helps to get through the sometimes
hectic days in a congressional office.
