Congress is currently evaluating legislative proposals to deregulate the Internet and allow for companies to provide high speed data services. As Wyoming works to improve its economy, people are eager for information they can use to enhance education, businesses and health care access. I have received many comments from rural individuals who are especially interested in this type of information enhancement. Obviously, that kind of growth offers vital benefits for sparely populated communities and Wyoming people deserve equal access to that technology. Having said that, I am concerned that if companies provide information services through their access lines, there needs to be some protection for consumers and potential competitors alike. However, what I do not want is to regulate information. Instead, we should allow competition to shape and provide technological opportunities that address our state's specific rural needs.
