In order to make an inquiry on a constituent’s behalf with the Social Security Administration (SSA), Senator Kyl must have permission from the constituent in the form of a signed Privacy Act Consent form from the constituent or a friend or a family member who has power-of-attorney. An inquiry can be made concerning the status of a claim filed with the SSA, non-receipt of benefit payments, or other problems.

The Social Security Administration web page provides information on benefits and services offered by the agency. There you can find helpful information and publications on disability benefits, retirement benefits, survivors benefits, Supplemental Security Income, the hearings and appeals process, work and earnings, and instructions on how to apply for common SSA benefits. This site also provides information in Spanish.

In October 1999, the SSA began sending out Social Security Statements to workers 25 years old and older who are not yet receiving benefits. If you have received one of these statements and have questions, check out the SSA’s “My Statement” page.

The SSA has the responsibility of enrolling people who are turning 65 into Medicare and for collecting Medicare premiums. For any other information about Medicare, try the official Medicare web page or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services site.

Information about the history of the SSA is also available on the site.

If you have questions not answered on the SSA web page, you can contact the agency at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local SSA office.

Examples of Social Security inquiries Senator Kyl can make on behalf of constituents:

“I submitted a claim for disability benefits several months ago, but I haven’t heard anything from the SSA in quite a while.”

Senator Kyl can inquire with the SSA or with Disability Determination Services, the state agency that does the medical reviews for disability claims, about the status of the claim.

“The Social Security Administration is taking too long to process my claim. Can Senator Kyl tell them to get moving on my case?”

Senator Kyl can request expedited processing (using the agency's established procedures), if there is a genuine emergency. Under other circumstances it would not be fair for him to ask the agency to process your claim ahead of all the others filed before yours.

“My case has been pending at the Office of Hearing and Appeals (OHA) for a long time. Can Senator Kyl ask the OHA to make a decision on my case?”

The rules of the Senate prevent Senator Kyl from intervening in any appeal proceeding. He can inquire about the status of the appeal and request to be notified when a final decision has been made.

"The Social Security Administration (SSA) says I received an overpayment of $3000. I don't understand why I must return this money. They are stopping my checks until all the money is repaid. I need my Social Security check to pay my rent and food. Can Senator Kyl help me?"

Senator Kyl can help you get an explanation of the overpayment. If money is due to the SSA, he can help you to work out a repayment plan with the Social Security Administration. If you meet SSA's regulations, you may qualify for a waiver of the requirement to return the overpayment.
