Iraq WatchClick Here to Read the latest update on Iraq
As the US occupation of Iraq continues, the human and financial cost of our preemptive strike keeps growing. Since the President announced the end of “major combat operations” in Iraq, more than 2,500 American soldiers have lost their lives. Meanwhile, as the war’s price tag tops $150 billion, and as families of Reservists wonder when their loved ones will return, the White House is scrimping on veterans benefits and other domestic priorities. Anticipating such problems before the war, I asked fundamental questions about the “Coalition of the Willing” and subsequent occupation. The Administration never answered. Yet concerns about the rationale and ramifications of the invasion persist – as do questions about past US support for Saddam. To address these issues, several Congressional colleagues and I began weekly public “Iraq Watch” discussions on the House floor in July of 2003. We also fired off a number of written inquiries on specific and contentious Iraq-related subjects. Beginning in the fall of 2005, Iraq Watch merged with the “30somethings” – a group of younger Members of Congress addressing a number of issues facing our nation, including Iraq (and in case you were wondering, I consider myself as counting as at least two 30somethings). I will continue to post transcripts of these discussions here, and you can see video of us in action at http://democraticleader.house.gov/30something/ It's critical for us all to speak and seek the truth on matters – literally – of war and peace. As always, I welcome your thoughts. Transcripts of Debates on House Floor
