MARK YOUR CALENDERS:

Please join me and our special guest, Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), at an Immigration Town Hall Meeting taking place on Saturday, September 9th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Thomas Auditorium in the David W. Sink, Jr. Building, located at Blue Ridge Community College's main campus in Henderson County.

The focus of this town hall meeting will be to highlight efforts to reform our nation’s broken immigration system. Congressman Tancredo, who represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District, has been an outspoken advocate of securing our borders and putting an end to illegal immigration. He founded and is chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, of which I am a proud member.

The goal of the Caucus is to review current immigration policies, initiate new policies and create a much-needed forum in Congress to examine both the benefits and consequences of immigration – legal and illegal. I am pleased to welcome Congressman Tancredo to Western North Carolina and look forward to his joining me at this important Immigration Town Hall Meeting.

I hope that you will be able to join us in Henderson County next Saturday, September 9th. If you have any questions about this event, please contact my Asheville office at (828) 251-1988.

SECURE BORDERS • LEGAL IMMIGRATION

The thousands of individuals that pour into our country illegally each year continue to drain precious resources from both the federal and state governments. We are a nation of immigrants and millions of people are making a mockery of our laws when they come into our country illegally and continue to break our laws. We must fix this problem and stop the flow of illegal aliens now.

As a long-time member of the Immigration Reform Caucus, I am working to make sure real immigration reform, like what the House passed with my support in December, is signed into law in order to secure our borders.

I am also working to secure funding to assist federal land management agencies to combat illegal border crossings; establish an Immigration Court in North Carolina; and provide the training to local law enforcement agencies in WNC to give them the power to enforce deportation laws.

North Carolina is experiencing rapid growth of illegal aliens. According to the Pew Hispanic Center’s Estimates of the Size and Characteristics of the Undocumented Population:
  • North Carolina’s illegal alien population is 300,000.
  • This makes North Carolina home to the nation’s 8th largest population of illegal aliens.

CONGRESSMAN TAYLOR’S PRIORITIES FOR SECURE BORDERS:

  • Provide for better control of our borders through the use of physical barriers, including additional border fences and enhanced electronic surveillance;
  • Enforcement of existing immigration laws;
  • Provide federal assistance to local law enforcement agencies along the southern border to help detain and deport illegal aliens; and
  • Once we have effectively secured our borders, then we will be prepared and able to focus on the other consequences of illegal immigration.

In Washington, I am helping secure our borders and improve immigration policy by:

  • Casting my ballot in support of the House immigration bill that secures our borders through increased physical barriers and enhanced electronic surveillance and rejects amnesty
  • Cosponsoring the Social Security for Americans Only Act of 2005 to ensure that American citizens can receive the benefits for which they worked
  • Cosponsoring the English Language Unity Act of 2005 to make English the official language of the United States
  • Conducting hearings as Interior Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman to find ways to increase funding for border security along both National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service land

In Western North Carolina, I am working to enforce existing immigration law by:

  • Establishing an Immigration Court in North Carolina to adjudicate matters relating to both legal and illegal immigration because North Carolina has the 8th highest illegal immigration population in the country
  • Creating a regional program to utilize federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel to train local law enforcement in Henderson, Buncombe, Polk, Rutherford, Madison, McDowell, Transylvania and Yancey counties to give them the tools to enforce existing deportation laws
