Nathan Deal is the U.S. Representative to Congress serving the
people of Georgia’s Tenth District. He was first elected to Congress
in 1992 and today serves the citizens of 15 North Georgia counties.
Rep. Deal is a member of the prestigious Committee on Energy and
Commerce. As a member of this committee he serves as Chairman of the
Subcommittee on Health where he oversees legislation, hearings and
markups for all legislative areas over many critical issues
affecting America’s public and private health sectors, including the
Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services.
Rep. Deal is a leader in reforming our immigration laws and as a
member of the Immigration Task Force; he helped pass the reform bill
to strengthen America’s immigration laws. In addition to his firm
stand on the need to strengthen our nation’s borders, he also was
instrumental in passing legislation to reform our welfare system and
to balance the federal budget by cutting spending and taxes.
Nathan Deal is recognized as an effective leader in Congress and
outspoken on issues involving the citizens of North Georgia. Nathan
is a multiple winner of the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce and has been awarded the Guardian of Seniors
Rights Award by the 60 Plus Association. Also, he has been awarded
the Legislator of the Year Award from numerous organizations; and
has been recognized by Mercer University as a Distinguished Alumnus.
Nathan was raised in Sandersville, Georgia the son of two
schoolteachers who instilled in him the importance of a public
education and the issues facing educators. In addition, Nathan’s
wife, Sandra is a retired public school educator who remains
involved in education issues today.
Upon graduating from Mercer University in 1964 and Mercer Law School
in 1966, Nathan served our country in the U.S. army as a Captain
until 1968, and then he moved to Gainesville, Georgia to begin an
extensive career in the public legal system and private law
practice.
Rep. Deal has served Georgians as a U.S. Representative to Congress
since 1992; as a Georgia State Senator, including President
Pro-Tempore; a Hall County Juvenile Court Judge; and Assistant
District Attorney of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit of Georgia.
Nathan and his wife Sandra are parents of four children and six
grandchildren. They are members of the Gainesville First Baptist
Church, where Nathan served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Nathan is a past President and lifetime member of the Gainesville
Rotary Club.
