For Immediate Release: Regula Secures Over $3 Million for Medina Industries WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) today announced Congressional approval of $3.6 million in defense research and development projects for Medina County. This funding was included as part of the final conference agreement on the Fiscal Year 2007 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill. As Vice-Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Regula directed $1.4 million to the Parker Hannifin Corporation to work with the Navy on designing an all electric ship as mandated by the Pentagon. Current Navy ships have between 100 to 3,000 actuators each. Successful implementation of this technology will reduce ship personnel and maintenance costs significantly. Parker Hannifin's actuator division is headquartered in Wadsworth, Ohio. "Once past the research and development phase, this project could better position Parker Hannifin to supply the Navy with additional actuators. This project promises great economic benefits for the entire region and its impact will be felt by not only the workers at Parker Hannifin but also by their local suppliers," Regula said. Additionally, Regula secured $2.2 million to assist RFD Beaufort, of Sharon Center, Ohio. RFD Beaufort is the current contract holder for production of 25-person life rafts for the United States Navy. Funding for life raft procurements is not detailed in Navy budget documents because the Navy makes procurement decisions after Congress has approved their overall budget. This lack of clarity complicates RFD Beaufort's planning process, leads to down time on the production line, erratic swings in production, layoffs and rehiring of training personnel, and higher per unit costs for the Navy. "This funding will provide RFD Beaufort with the security and stability that any business and its employees need to be productive and efficient. I look forward to working with the Navy and RFD Beaufort to continue this partnership," Regula concluded. The legislation carrying the funding for these projects will be sent to the President where it is expected to meet swift approval and be signed into law. ####
