Regula Secures Over $9 Million for Stark County Industries

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Navarre) today announced Congressional approval of funding for defense research and development projects for companies located in Canton, Ohio. The funding was included as part of the Fiscal Year 2007 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill.

As Vice-Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Regula provided $4.4 million for RTI Alloys located in Canton, Ohio to develop a pilot scale facility dedicated to the low cost processing of titanium. This program will transform the strategically important titanium industry by lowering the processing costs of titanium and retaining the acquired skills of the metal working industry in the United States. The expected lower cost of titanium is of strategic importance to the U.S. Army. RTI recently secured a contract with Airbus for the supply of titanium products for the Airbus family of commercial aircraft. As a result, RTI will begin a $35 million facilities expansion program including new and upgraded melting and forging capacity. Over the last two years Regula has secured over $10 million for RTI and the development of its Advanced Materials and Processes for Armament Structures program.

"This project has the potential to strengthen the steel industry in Ohio and deliver high skilled, well paying jobs to the area. The funding coupled with RTI's recent contract with Airbus, promises big growth for Canton. I will continue to support this endeavor to bring jobs to the region and work with those willing to invest in the 16th District," Regula said.

Additionally, the bill provides $3 million for continuing research at Timken on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for rolling element bearings. The Department of Defense has strongly supported MEMS technology through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The Army is seeking to integrate this technology into numerous vehicles and weapons systems. Once completed this research could eventually turn into a new product line for the Timken Company, bringing additional jobs to Canton.

"The Timken Company has been a foundation in Stark County for many years. I am hopeful that these funds will assist Timken with its investments in future markets, and in turn benefit our community for years to come," Regula said.

Regula also secured funding for local company, US Technology. US Technology together with The National Institute of Science and Technology and the U.S. Air Force received $2.2 million to develop a lower cost, more dependable method for the de-painting of large airframes which costs the Air Force millions of dollars annually. Development of this program will save the Air Force and taxpayers at least $8 million annually while at the same time increasing aircraft maintenance capability.

"This project supported by the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Department of Defense is a great example of how a company in Canton can team up with the Air Force to develop technology to improve efficiency and save the taxpayers a great deal of money," Regula concluded.

The legislation carrying the funding these projects will be sent to the President where it is expected to meet swift approval and be signed into law.
