Vermonters split their ticket
Three candidates wait nervously for the Stowe vote totals Tuesday night at the Akeley Memorial Building: Jim Black, in hat, running for the Vermont Senate; and Heidi Scheuermann, and Cam Page.

Voters across Lamoille County mirrored the rest of the state Tuesday, supporting the same candidates at the top of the election ticket.

County voters overwhelmingly supported independent Bernie Sanders over Republican Rich Tarrant for the U.S. Senate, and Democrat Peter Welch over Republican Martha Rainville for Congress.

Conversely, Lamoille County followed everyone else in re-electing Gov. Jim Douglas and Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, both Republicans.

Democratic incumbent Susan Bartlett bulldozed Republican Jim Black in Tuesday’s election for Lamoille County state senator.

Bartlett thumped Black 5,412-3,833, winning 58 percent of the county vote and beating Black by 16 percentage points.

Stowe Fire Department volunteer Mark Sgantas and Harrison County Fire Coordinator George Mixon check in on Bill Bourdin. The Stowe volunteers helped to rebuild his house and business last year.

Lisa McCormack, staff writer for the Stowe Reporter, is in DeLisle, Miss., this week with eight Stowe firefighters who are continuing their efforts to help rebuild the community Hurricane Katrina tore down.

McCormack is reporting on the rebuilding efforts, the many ways in which Katrina affected the lives of people in the tight-knit community, and the volunteer work the Stowe firefighters are doing there.

Feast of Fall

Fall was a golden season for Stowe High School sports.

All four varsity teams— boys’ and girls’ soccer, field hockey and cross-country— made the state playoffs, and Stowe High athletes brought home a pair of state championships.

The Division III field-hockey title was claimed by Stowe’s field-hockey team, and cross-country runner Maeve McGovern was the first across the line in the state Division III championship race.

All four teams gave their fans and supporters a reason to go out and cheer.
