Congressman John Barrow is currently serving his first term as the representative of Georgia’s 12th Congressional District. |
John’s Georgia roots run deep. For over 7 generations, his family has farmed, taught, preached, and practiced law all across eastern and southeastern Georgia — from Athens to Savannah. Born and raised in Athens, John grew up learning the importance of serving his community and standing up for what's right. John's father, James Barrow, a decorated World War II veteran, was the Superior Court Judge who helped lead Athens through the turbulent years of the Civil Rights movement – presiding over the case resulting in the desegregation of Clarke County public schools. John's mother, Phyllis Barrow, also served in the armed service during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain, and has been a tireless community activist all her life. Both were courageous and outspoken leaders in the effort to desegregate the University of Georgia.
John graduated from Clarke County High School in 1973, the first class to go through after the desegregation of Clarke County public schools. He then went on to earn a degree in political science and history from the University of Georgia. Later, at only 20 years old, he became one of the youngest members of his class at Harvard Law School.
In 1990, after having built and run a successful law practice, John was elected as a charter member of the Athens-Clarke County Commission. He served on the Commission for 14 years, voting against every tax increase, working for economic development, fighting for property tax relief for homeowners, and developing innovative programs to improve the quality of life of the people he represents.
Those are the same values John Barrow fights for everyday in Congress.
In the House of Representatives, John currently serves on three congressional committees: the Committee on Education and the Workforce, the Committee on Agriculture, and the Committee on Small Business, where he is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Rural Enterprise, Agriculture, and Technology
John serves as a deacon and choir member at the First Baptist Church of Athens. His wife, Victoria, is a veterinary ophthalmologist with an active practice throughout the area that includes Athens, Augusta, and Savannah. John and Victoria have two children, James and Ruth, both attending Clarke County public schools.
