Congressman Cummings Saddened by Death of Civil Right Leader Enolia P. McMillan

Baltimore, MD -  Today, U.S. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, immediate past chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, released the following statement on the passing of Enolia P. McMillan, the first female president of the NAACP:

"I am saddened by the news that a great African American pioneer, Mrs. Enolia P. McMillan, has passed away.

"Blessed with more than 102 years on this earth, Mrs. McMillan devoted her life to uplifting others and removing barriers that faced African Americans and women in this country.

"She was a true champion of equal rights for all people.

"As an educator, she firmly believed that academic achievement transcended the overt racism and sexism that existed in her time.

"Her determined fight for better public schools and better salaries for teachers benefited future generations, including myself.

"She was a friend and source of inspiration to me and many others - a model of dignity and unwavering commitment to civil rights.

"I am grateful for her many years of work as a leader in the NAACP and for her tireless efforts to bring its national headquarters to Baltimore.  This move contributed greatly to the advancement of our city.

"Mrs. McMillan leaves us a legacy of selfless service.  During this difficult time, my prayers are with her family and all of those who loved her."
