On August 17, Congressman Cummings
received a "Friend of Radio One" award from Radio One, Inc., at
the company's 25th anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C..
Radio One is the nation's seventh largest radio broadcasting

in launching the Adopt-A-Pilot program at Rosemont Elementary
School in Baltimore. Southwest Airlines' annual Adopt-A-Pilot
program is a four-week mentorship program where pilots volunteer
their time in adoptive classrooms and correspond from the "road"
via electronic mail and postcards. The program curriculum
incorporates math, science, geography, language arts, career

On Monday, April 11, 2005,
U.S. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Maryland),
most recent Past Chairman of the Congressional
Black Caucus, joined NAACP officials to announce
a series of events in seven cities to address
African American concerns regarding the threatened
privatization of Social Security. Youth, college
chapters and local branches will host the events.
Events will take place in Los Angeles, New York,
Detroit, Columbia, Mo., Atlanta, Dallas and the
District of Columbia over the next few weeks.

On Friday, March 4, 2005, Congressman
Cummings read to students at the Phelps Luck Elementary
School in Columbia in celebration of Read Across
America Day. This year's event also marked the
101st birthday of Dr. Seuss. The purpose of Read
Across America Day is to encourage children to
continue reading throughout the year. It is considered
the nation's largest reading celebration.
