The Seniors Coalition and AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) Alliance International present Congressman Cummings with the 2006 Brighter Vision Award in recognition of his firm commitment and leadership in securing a brighter future for those suffering from visual impairments.  (September, 2006)
On the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Congressman Cummings joins his colleagues at a commemoration event at the U.S. Capitol.
On Sept. 8, 2006, Congressman Cummings is joined by Baltimore State's Attorney Pat Jessamy to discuss laws that affect drug-related crime.  The event was part of a forum held in Washington, D.C., and sponsored by the National African American Drug Policy Coalition at the 36th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The Partnership for Drug-Free America awards Congressman Cummings with the 2006 Guardian Award. The Guardian Award is given in recognition and appreciation of leadership on issues related to substance abuse.  Presenting the award is Dr. Michael Maves, Executive Vice President of the American Medical Association and Board Member of the Partnership. Congressman Cummings joins his colleagues in introducing the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act of 2006 that would ban the government of the United States from doing business with firms that also maintain business connections in Sudan or elsewhere that are deemed to support the continuation of the genocide. Ms. Alexandra Sutton, U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings [MD-07] and Mr. Evander McLean celebrate at a scholarship awards ceremony held at the University of Baltimore Family Justice Center last week. Ms. Sutton and Mr. McLean each received a $2,000 Elijah Cummings -- Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship. Congressman Cummings joins Southwest Airlines in launching the Adopt-A-Pilot program at Rosemont  Elementary School in Baltimore.  Southwest Airlines' annual Adopt-A-Pilot program is a four-week mentorship program where pilots volunteer their time in adoptive classrooms and correspond from the "road" via electronic mail and postcards. The program curriculum incorporates math, science, geography, language arts, career planning for students.  (May 2006)

Congressman Cummings meets with former Baltimore Raven (current Cleveland Brown) Gary Baxter on March 30th in Washington. Baxter visited the Congressman to speak about the Second Line of Defense Foundation, which promotes healthy habits among children.

Cummings (D-Maryland), most recent Past Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, joined NAACP officials to announce a series of events in seven cities to address African American concerns regarding the threatened privatization of Social Security. Youth, college chapters and local branches will host the events. Events will take place in Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Columbia, Mo., Atlanta, Dallas and the District of Columbia over the next few weeks. This year's event also marked the 101st birthday of Dr. Seuss. The purpose of Read Across America Day is to encourage children to continue reading throughout the year. It is considered the nation's largest reading celebration.
