    Senator Dorgan Announces $475,000 to Help Prevent Suicide Among American Indian Teens

    Intro: U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) Thursday announced two federal grants totaling $475,000 that will help prevent suicide among American Indian youth in North Dakota.

    Exit: The funding Dorgan announced today includes a $75,000 grant for the University of North Dakota (UND). The funding will be used to create a “circle of care” that allows UND officials to coordinate efforts with suicide prevention coordinators and mental health contacts on reservations. Another $400,000 grant will be used by the North Dakota Department of Health aimed at suicide prevention and early intervention among tribal and rural youth. The goal is to reduce youth suicide mortality in high-risk areas of North Dakota by 25 percent over the next three years.

    Intro: Efforts to provide emergency drought assistance to family farmers were blocked again Thursday in the U.S. Senate by Republican Leader Bill Frist, who refused to allow a vote on an amendment offered by Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE), Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Kent Conrad (D-ND) and others.

    Exit: Though Dorgan and Conrad have repeatedly secured Senate support for an agriculture disaster package that would relieve producers affected by weather-related disasters, the legislation has been blocked repeatedly in the past by the threat of a veto from President Bush.

    Intro: U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and over 60 members of the North Dakota’s National Farmers Union (NFU) called on President Bush today to adopt long-overdue drought relief assistance.

    Exit: On three different occasions, Senator Dorgan has successfully offered amendments to legislation moving through the Senate to provide emergency relief to family farmers and ranchers. This spring, Senator Conrad's bill to provide more than $4 billion in disaster aid for farmers and ranchers passed the Senate by a wide, bipartisan margin, after Senator Dorgan attached it to a broad emergency spending bill as an amendment. However, Republican House leadership stripped the amendment from the emergency bill after President Bush threatened a veto.
