The expedition proceeded up the Missouri River after having spent so many months camped in anticipation of this exciting and important Congressionally funded expedition.

To commerate the bicentennial, a Lewis and Clark visitors' center has been built in Hartford, Illinois, near the spot from which the expedition is thought to have departed.

Lewis and Clark Bicentennial

The 12th Congressional District of Illinois is home to the launching site of the historic expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

Lewis and Clark departed from Camp River Dubois, now commonly referred to as either Wood River or Camp Dubois, on May 14, 1804.
