Hoyer Celebrates 25 Years with South County Senior Center

EDGEWATER, MD -Congressman Steny Hoyer today joined seniors and staff members at the South County Senior Center to celebrate the Center's 25th Anniversary. Congressman Hoyer helped kick off three days of events by speaking to the seniors about the importance of senior centers like South County that promote the well-being of seniors in our communities. Hoyer Meets with National Board Certified Teachers in Maryland

SOUTHERN MARYLAND - On Monday, September 20, Congressman Steny Hoyer met with Maryland's Board Certified Teachers from Charles, Calvert and St. Mary's Counties and representatives from the State, the Southern Maryland counties, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, to discuss Maryland's efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified teachers.

Hoyer: Report on Park Police Raises More Questions Regarding Chambers Dismissal

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) sent a letter today to Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton, which address sections of a report on the U.S. Park Police that was issued by the National Academy of Public Administration last week. The report supports the statements regarding a shortage of resources and manpower made by U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers, who was subsequently dismissed from her post as a result of those remarks.

Hoyer Meets with Navy Alliance, Pax Partnership and Chamber of Commerce Leaders to Discuss BRAC

ST. MARY’S COUNTY, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer today met with the leaders of the Patuxent Partnership, a consortium of more than 250 companies involved in technology-led business development; the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, an organization of defense contractors and others who support the base; and the St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce, to talk about the upcoming BRAC in 2005 and their plans for working together. Following the meeting, Congressman Hoyer invited the Navy Alliance members to join him on a tour of the completed ASIL project at Pax River.

Hoyer Meets With Prince George's Hispanic/Latino Chamber of Commerce

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY - On Saturday, September 18, Congressman Steny Hoyer joined the Prince George's Hispanic/Latino Chamber of Commerce at their "Partnering for Economic Development" business forum. Congressman Hoyer spoke about issues important to Latino businesses and families and recognized Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed from September 15th through October 15th. Sarbanes, Hoyer, Walsh Call For Federal Charter for Korean War Veterans Association

WASHINGTON DC - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and Congressman Jim Walsh (R-NY) today sent a letter to House and Senate Department of Defense Authorization Conferees encouraging them to retain language (the "Sarbanes Amendment") that would grant the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) a Federal Charter. Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) successfully included language in the Senate version of the legislation to grant the KWVA a federal charter in June.

Hoyer Announces Federal Funds for Beretta USA Corp. in Accokeek

ACCOKEEK, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer today visited Beretta USA Corp. in Accokeek to tour their facility and to announce the $1.9 million in federal funds for Beretta included in the fiscal year 2005 Defense Appropriations Act at Congressman Hoyer’s request. The legislation was enacted in July.

Hoyer Launches Cops in Shops in College Park

COLLEGE PARK - Congressman Steny Hoyer today joined the Century Council, a not-for-profit organization funded by America’s leading distillers, University of Maryland Public Safety officials, Maryland Highway Safety Office officials, and Mr. Ron Burdoo, owner of Town Hall Liquors, to launch a partnership program called Cops in Shopsฎ at the Town Hall Liquors Store in College Park. The effort is part of a community effort to fight underage purchasing and underage drinking in College Park.

Hoyer Tours New Development Project with HIP

HYATTSVILLE, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) today visited the Housing Initiative Partnership, Inc. (HIP), a nonprofit housing corporation founded in 1988 to create safe, decent, affordable housing for the low and moderate-income residents of Prince George’s County; to remove blight from neglected inner beltway communities; and to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods HIP serves. Congressman Hoyer toured the Renaissance Square Project, an abandoned property owned by the City of Hyattsville HIP will redevelop.
