Hoyer is 2005 Recipient of Chafee Leadership Award

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) was honored today by The Arc of the United States, the nation’s largest volunteer-based organization devoted solely to issues concerning people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families. Hoyer was named as this year’s recipient of their Chafee Leadership in Public Policy Award for his longstanding advocacy in pursuing public policies that help people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities live fuller lives in their communities. The award, named for the late Sen. John Chafee of Rhode Island and intended to honor his work on behalf of people with mental retardation, is presented annually at their Governmental Affairs/Policy Seminar.

Three Southern Maryland Volunteer Fire Departments Awarded $334,348 in Federal Fire Grants

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that three Volunteer Fire Departments in Southern Maryland have been awarded federal Fire Grants totaling nearly $335,000 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $215,802, the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $56,455, and the Bryans Road Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $62,091. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, Congressman Hoyer was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in Maryland and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training.

Three Prince George’s Volunteer Fire Departments Awarded $500,000 in Federal Fire Grants

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that three Volunteer Fire Departments in Prince George’s County have been awarded federal Fire Grants totaling more than $500,000 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $225,000; Morningside Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $227,500; and Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department received a grant in the amount of $47,838. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, Congressman Hoyer was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in Maryland and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training.

Hoyer Breaks Ground for New Post Office in Greenbelt

GREENBELT, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today joined Greenbelt Mayor Judith “J” Davis, and members of the City Council to break ground for the Greenbelt Post Office. Congressman Hoyer has been working with the City Council for the past several years to begin construction of the new modern facility. It will provide delivery service to more than 12,000 customers and is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2006.

Hoyer Holds Social Security Town Hall Meeting at College of Southern Maryland

CHARLES CTY, MD – U.S. Representative Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today hosted a Town Hall meeting with students from the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata to discuss strengthening Social Security and plans being proposed by the Bush Administration to privatize Social Security. Congressman Hoyer’s Town Hall Meeting was part of an effort by House Democrats, who are holding 235 Town Hall meetings across the country in the coming weeks, to provide their constituents with the facts about Social Security. Hans Riemer, Washington Director of Rock the Vote, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing political participation among young people, also participated in today’s meeting.

Hoyer Highlights the Importance of Child Passenger Safety Week

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny Hoyer joined the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and SAFE KIDS Prince George’s County this week to call attention to National Child Passenger Safety Week (February 13-19), a nationwide child passenger safety initiative. In Maryland, an average of 24 children ages 16 and under are killed as a result of motor vehicle crashes every year.

Hoyer Remains Focused on Compensating Maryland’s General Aviation Airports

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement today in response to an announcement by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that three the three general aviation airports, College Park Airport, Potomac Airfield and Washington Executive Airport/Hyde Field (DC-3) in Prince George's County will reopen on a restricted basis to pilots and planes based at other airfields. Congressman Hoyer has been the lead advocate for providing federal compensation for the devastating financial and economic losses suffered by the DC-3 airports which were severely impacted by the increased security measures taken after September 11, 2001.

Hoyer Attends the 24th Annual Black History Month Breakfast Featuring Civil Rights Crusader Tony Brown

CLINTON, MD – Congressman Steny Hoyer today attended the 24th Annual Black History Month Breakfast in Clinton where he was joined by Senator Paul Sarbanes and Tony Brown, host of Tony Brown’s Journal on PBS, who gave the keynote address. Over 450 community leaders from Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s, Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties attended the event to pay tribute to Black History Month and to celebrate the theme, Peace, Unity, Solidarity and Hope.

Hoyer Visits Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons

SOLOMONS, MD – Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) today visited the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons where he toured the new Visitor Center and the headquarters of the Alliance for Coastal Technologies which opened in 2000. Congressman Hoyer has led the effort to secure more than $9 million for the Alliance for Coastal Technologies and the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory.
