Hoyer Joins “Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April” to Repair Area Homes

Congressman Steny Hoyer joined Laura Van Etten, Director of Government Affairs for Fannie Mae, to present Rebuilding Together/Christmas in April chapters in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District with a total of $15,000 in recognition of their hard work. In addition to presenting checks to chapters in the 5th District, Hoyer helped volunteers in St. Mary’s County rebuild and repair the home of a retired oysterman, and later joined volunteers for a celebratory picnic in St. Mary’s County at the end of the day.

Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) joined the Huntingtown High School community for a ceremony to dedicate the new High School in Calvert County, which opened last fall.

Prince George’s County Fire Department Awarded Federal Fire Grant For Arson Investigation Unit

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced that the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department has been awarded a federal Fire Grant in the amount of $20,403. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, Congressman Hoyer was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in Maryland and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training.

Hoyer Visits Greenwell State Park with Students

Congressman Steny Hoyer joined officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and students from Leonardtown High School at Greenwell State Park on the Patuxent River for a demonstration of the “B-WET” program in recognition of Environmental Education Week (April 10 – 16) and Earth Day (April 22).

Hoyer Awarded by National Fire Protection Association

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer was honored by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the nation’s authority on fire, electrical, and building safety. Hoyer was named as this year’s recipient of their Excellence in Fire Safety Award in recognition of a career of service dedicated to the advancement of fire safety. This is the first time the NFPA has made this award and Congressman Hoyer is the first recipient.

Hoyer and Representatives Reject President’s Inadequate Request for HIDTA Funding

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers in sending a letter to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the House Appropriations Committee and Subcommittee on Science, State, Justice, and Commerce urging the Committees to restore full funding to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program. This year, the President’s budget proposal drastically cut the program’s budget from fiscal year 2005’s enacted level of nearly $300 million to $100 million, effectively terminating the current HIDTA program.

Hoyer Leads Effort to Help Stations Hire Firefighters

A group of 120 U.S. Representatives, led by Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD), sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee urging them to include funding in the FY 2006 Homeland Security Appropriations bill for fire fighter staffing.
