Wednesday, May 25, 2005 Hoyer Secures $1 Million to Help Restore Oyster Population
Congressman Steny Hoyer announced that the House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2006 Energy and Water funding bill last night which included $1 million for the Oyster Recovery Project, which is coordinating the revival of oysters in the bay. To date, Hoyer has helped obtain more than $25 million in federal funding for the project.

Monday, May 23, 2005 Eighteen Local Students Offered Appointments to U.S. Service Academies
Eighteen students from the Fifth Congressional District (Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties, and areas of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties) were offered appointments to a U.S. Service academy this year. Congressman Steny Hoyer nominated the students last year. Seventeen students accepted the appointment and joined Congressman Hoyer at an afternoon tea with their families in recognition of their accomplishments.
Friday, May 20, 2005 Hoyer Presents Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute with $750,000 Federal Fire Grant
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) joined Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), Steve Edwards, Executive Director of the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) at the University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland President C.D. Mote, Jr. to announce the award of a $750,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant that MFRI will use to support the Institute’s research and development of new technologies to locate and monitor firefighters at the scene of an emergency to help ensure safer operations on the ground.
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 Hoyer Succeeds in Increasing Funds for Fire Grant Programs
Congressman Steny Hoyer Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, successfully added an amendment to the 2006 Homeland Security Appropriations bill to provide an additional $50 million in funding to firefighter grant programs – $25 million for the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program and $25 million for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Firefighter Grant Program.
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 Hoyer Praises Alliance, Pax Partnership, Chamber of Commerce for Work to Prepare for BRAC
Congressman Steny Hoyer joined the Navy Alliance, the Patuxent Partnership and the St. Mary’s Chamber of Commerce in St. Mary’s County to discuss the Department of Defense’s BRAC recommendations that were released on Friday. The Pentagon recommended that the Patuxent River Naval Air Station gain approximately 100 new personnel and overall the state of Maryland could gain more than 9,000 new jobs as a result of the recommendations. Hoyer also recognized Armed Forces Day which is observed Saturday, May 21.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released the following statement on a resolution he sponsored to permit the 64th race of the “Greater Washington Soap Box Derby” to take place on the grounds of the United States Capitol. The resolution, H. Con. Res. 86, passed the U.S. House of Representatives today. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 18.
