Durbin met with Rockford Township officials at the Capitol on September 7, 2006 to discuss how to assist Rockford residents affected by the flood. The officials were in Washington as part of the National Association of Towns and Townships Capitol Hill Meeting (from left to right: Senator Durbin, Mickey Goral, Jasper St. Angel).

Durbin met Dana Saleh at Benedictine University in Lisle on August 31, 2006. Dana participated in a summer State Department program at Benedictine and accepted the opportunity to extend her stay in the U.S. when violence erupted in her homeland. Durbin helped expedite the visa process for Saleh. Now that the violence has subsided, she has returned to Lebanon. Durbin toured the City of Chicago’s Emergency Communications Center on August 28, 2006. Mayor Daley endorsed Durbin’s mass evacuation legislation which would make additional federal grants for mass evacuation planning and exercises available to cities and states throughout the country.

Durbin met with Mercer County community leaders in Aledo on August 9, 2006 to discuss issues of local concern.
 
Durbin held a roundtable discussion at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg on August 8, 2006 regarding the acute shortage of qualified, trained nurses and nursing faculty in Illinois and around the country. Durbin has introduced legislation to provide grants to colleges to expand their ability to educate nursing students, as well as a pilot program that will offer incentives to nurses leaving the military to become nurse teachers.
