Social Security provides vital economic security for seniors, individuals with disabilities, working Americans, and their families. Social Security's benefits have evolved over time to provide better protection for women. However, we still need to do more to ensure women do not live in poverty after a lifetime of caring for their families, contributing their efforts and skills to our nation's economy, and helping to make America great.
The Social Security Benefit Enhancements for Women Act of 2002 would improve fairness and update benefit rules, resulting in higher benefits and expanded eligibility for certain elderly and disabled widows and divorced spouses, who are among the most likely to live in poverty. Once implemented, over 120,000 women will see Social Security benefit enhancements. This bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House of Representatives (418-0) on May 14, 2002, but was not taken up by the Senate. The Social Security Guarantee Plus Act of 2003 (H.R. 75) includes similar benefit enhancements for women.
