Sen. Salazar Statement on Release of Revised Draft NPS Management Policy Changes

Washington, D.C. -- “I have been assured through a phone call from Parks Director Fran Mainella that the revised draft NPS management policy does not contain any softening of the no-impairment standard in the Park Service Organic Act. This instructs the NPS to do no harm to the parks as it seeks ways to balance visitor use with wildlife needs, resource protection and historic preservation. I will use this standard as I examine this document, because whether it is Rocky Mountain National Park in my great state of Colorado, Yosemite National Park in California or Acadia National Park in Maine, our national parks are special places and our solemn national pledge is to protect them today for future generations tomorrow.”

“In light of the recent Hoffman re-write of the National Park Service management policies, I will be carefully reviewing this new document with an eye toward the long-term preservation of the Nation’s parks. I hope the latest draft indeed represents a change from the Hoffman draft.”

“In that regard, I look forward to the oversight hearing that Senator Thomas has tentatively scheduled for the second week of November. This document, as lengthy as it is, will require extensive public review and comment before it can be finalized. The public has specifically been invited to submit comments on this revised draft on or before January 19, 2006.”
