UCCS Poised to Receive $4.6M to Expand NISSC Advanced Homeland Security Research Efforts WASHINGTON, D.C. – Colorado may soon be home to a new homeland security research facility for cybersecurity and other advanced research. At the request of United States Senator Ken Salazar, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) is slated to receive $4.6 million in federal funds to establish a high-tech homeland security lab through the Network Information and Space Security Center (NISSC). Sen. Salazar’s request was included in the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2006 (HR 2863), approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee today. “Too often we think of homeland security as protecting people and structures. However, for us to be truly secure we must out-think the terrorists on every front, including cybersecurity, bioterrorism and our long-term responses,” said Senator Salazar. Under Senator Salazar’s $4.6 million provision, the NISSC will expand the programs and services it provides to establish a comprehensive, multidisciplinary homeland security lab environment for cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, geographical information systems, biological threats and mitigation, environmental hazards, trauma psychology, and space operations research. This investment would be allocated to facility, equipment, and staff enabling UCCS/NISSC to accelerate their program to provide responsive education and research support to USNORTHCOM and AFSPC. “These funds will ensure that Colorado helps to keep America’s armed forces on the cutting edge and, most importantly, helps to keep Americans safe,” said Senator Salazar. “In these times of uncertainty, maintaining a top-drawer military force is of paramount importance.” Having been passed by the full Senate Appropriations Committee, the FY06 Defense Appropriations bill (HR 2863) will now move to the full Senate for consideration. If passed by the Senate, it will then proceed to conference committee to iron out differences before being passed again by both House and Senate in final form and then submitted to the President for signature or veto. Below is a list of the nearly $1 billion in Defense Appropriations projects requested and secured for Colorado by Senator Salazar:
