CSU’s Center for Geosciences poised to receive $2M in Federal funds for anti-terror efforts WASHINGTON, D.C. – Colorado State University (CSU) may be continuing its work in keeping American’s safe by assisting the war on terror. At the request of United States Senator Ken Salazar, CSU’s Center for Geosciences is slated to receive $2 million in federal funds to help transfer vital information and technology to the Department of Defense. Sen. Salazar’s request was included in the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2006 (HR 2863), approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee today. “The work at CSU’s Center for Geosciences has proven to be of incredible value in helping keep our homeland safe and secure. With these funds, the Center will be able to continue its cutting edge work and provide these advanced and high-quality results to our Nation’s armed forces,” said Senator Salazar. The $2 million in funds CSU has been allocated in the Defense Appropriations bill would be used to transfer research and technology from the Center for Geosciences to the Department of Defense. A critical part of the war on terror, the Center for Geosciences is a national resource for the DOD in the areas of atmospheric and hydrologic research. For example, the Center was able to provide cave detection technology for anti-Taliban operations within a month after 9/11. The FY06 $2 million allocation is an increase from the Center’s FY05 allocation of $1.8 million. “These funds will ensure that Colorado helps to keep America’s armed forces on the cutting edge and, most importantly, helps to keep Americans safe,” said Senator Salazar. “In these times of uncertainty, maintaining a top-drawer military force is of paramount importance.” Having been passed by the full Senate Appropriations Committee, the FY06 Defense Appropriations bill (HR 2863) will now move to the full Senate for consideration. If passed by the Senate, it will then proceed to conference committee to iron out differences before being passed again by both House and Senate in final form and then submitted to the President for signature or veto. Below is a list of the nearly $1 billion in Defense Appropriations projects requested and secured for Colorado by Senator Salazar:
