Greetings from U.S. Senator Ken Salazar

I continue my work as a U.S. Senator fighting for the people of Colorado.

Like all Americans, I share the pain the Nation has faced with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I have met with many evacuees and applaud the efforts of the people of Colorado who have opened up their hearts and homes to thousands of people who have been displaced by these disasters.

As we embrace our Nation’s efforts to rebuild the Gulf Coast, it is important that we learn from the lessons of a woefully inadequate and failed response at the federal, state and local levels. That is why I am pushing hard for the creation of an independent 9/11-like commission, so that the best lessons can be learned from this devastation to better protect America’s homeland in the future.

I also am very concerned about the pain all Coloradans are feeling with the huge escalation of fuel and natural gas prices. I see the pain on the faces of farmers and business owners and every consumer in the State.

Although we recently passed the first comprehensive Energy Bill in 30 years, we need to develop a strategy for a short-term emergency plan to deal with these out-of-control energy prices. The only immediate realistic solution is for all Americans to adopt a strong ethic of conservation. I am working on ways we can begin to do that.

As we move ahead with the Gulf Coast reconstruction and the war in Iraq, I also strongly believe that the Nation needs to be fiscally responsible. We ask our soldiers to sacrifice their families, and sometimes their very lives, and yet the war in Iraq and the efforts of the reconstruction of the Gulf Coast are proposed to be financed on the backs of our children and grandchildren. With a current national debt of $8 trillion, every man, woman and child in America owes $27,000 of that debt, much of which is owned by foreign governments. That is irresponsible. I will work with my colleagues in the Senate and push the White House to address these fiscal issues.

Also, I recently voted for the confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts only after having extensive conversations with him about his views on civil rights. I wanted to have confidence that he would not turn back the clock on the progress of civil rights in America.

As we take up the nomination of Harriet Miers to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, I am concerned that we have so little information about her. I will work to make sure that we have the information necessary so that we can make an informed decision on her confirmation.

I hope you find this information useful. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THESE NEWSLETTER UPDATES, PLEASE CLICK ON THIS LINK.

I look forward to continuing my work on your behalf.
