Sustainable Development: Ethiopian American Participation in American Culture and Politics, and Its Impact on Ethiopia
5/4/2006
Washington, DC – As Chair and Founder of the Congressional Ethiopia and Ethiopian American Caucus, my role is to feature Ethiopian Americans and lead an effort to expose the Congressional community to the myriad ways in which they contribute to our society. In this vein, the Ethiopia Caucus presents its third sustainable development briefing featuring members of that community who represent its diversity. The purpose of their presentation is to familiarize Members and staff with Ethiopian American concerns, and to display the importance of involvement in that community. Our overarching goal is to encourage the Ethiopian American community to engage their representatives, to utilize and promote the need for an Ethiopia Caucus, and to make Ethiopian and Ethiopian American issues pervasive and relevant to Congressional leadership.

FISTULA

Washington, DC – While in Ethiopia, I visited obstetric fistula patients and their caretakers. I was moved by these women to return to the US and find a way to support them. Since that trip, I have co-sponsored legislation and will be working more closely with the Fistula Foundation to ensure they secure federal funding for FY2007.

Washington, DC – Every year, on December 1st we commemorate World AIDS Day. Now in its 18th year, events are scheduled around the globe to call attention to the continuing HIV/AIDS crisis, to remember those who have died and to support those living with HIV/AIDS.  I encourage you to commemorate World AIDS Day by learning more about HIV/AIDS, volunteering, or attending locally sponsored events.

Sustainable Development: World Food Day
