Immigration

I am extremely concerned about the rapidly growing problem of illegal immigration. The thousands of immigrants that pour into our country illegally each year continue to drain precious resources from both the federal and state governments, and the numbers of legal immigrants have reached unmanageable levels. I regularly support and cosponsor legislation designed to place reasonable curbs on illegal immigration. For example, during the past several Congresses, I have been a cosponsor of legislation which would restrict immigration to the United States to spouses and children of U.S. citizens, family-sponsored immigrants, employment-based immigrants, and refugees. In July, I voted for a Supplemental Appropriations bill which provides $500 million to hire, train, and equip an additional 500 border patrol agents.

I also believe that it is essential for those who have legally come to the United States to be able to speak the English language. By establishing English as the official language immigrants will be better-equipped to achieve success in their new home, and the bond between immigrants and those already living in the United States will grow stronger. I am pleased to inform you that I have signed on as a cosponsor of the English Language Unity Act of 2005, which will establish English as the official language of the United States.
