Prescription Drugs

One concern of many citizens of Western North Carolina and Americans nationwide is the inability to purchase prescription drugs from other countries at a lower cost than what they can be purchased for here in the United States. I have been a longtime advocate of allowing Americans to purchase prescription drugs from Canada and other industrialized countries. Prescription drugs prices in other industrialized countries are often only a fraction of what we pay here in the United States. I therefore feel that prescription drug reimportation is one of the most valuable tools in combating these skyrocketing costs. Any drugs reimported would have to be FDA approved and of course, as these are prescription medicine, a doctor's prescription is required. In the 109th Congress, I have become a proud cosponsor of H.R. 328, the Pharmaceutical Market Access Act of 2005, and this legislation ensures safe and affordable medication to be imported to the U.S. by doing the following:

• Directs the FDA to create a system that gives individuals, pharmacists and wholesalers access to affordable FDA approved drugs at world market prices from FDA-approved facilities in the European Union as well as Canada and Japan
• Addresses safety concerns by requiring manufacturers to package drugs using the same counterfeit-proof technology as used by the U.S. Treasury
• Requires drug wholesalers to test each drug shipment that does not use counterfeit proof technology • Provides consumers with the option of purchasing cheaper drugs which are FDA approved
