Internships

Internships are an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in politics or government. Internships are offered in Washington, Midland, San Angelo, and Llano. Our interns help staff with a variety of duties. Their primary role is to handle mail and assist with phones. They also help compile research, conduct Capitol tours, write legislative correspondence, attend committee hearings, gather news clippings, assist with management of the constituent database, and assist with scheduling requests. Duties will vary according to offices.

Besides the above listed office duties, my staff works with interns to involve them in the educational opportunities available in Congress and Washington, D.C. For instance, the intern coordinator will keep interns aware of lectures and seminars taking place in and around the Capitol. We also coordinate tour activities for interns while they are in Washington.

In the district, interns can expect to gain an understanding of how representatives can help citizens with federal issues. Students will be exposed to casework inquries, policy discussions, and the latest news in Washington. Students will also be given the opportunity to work in the field with congressional staff.

I offer internships from September through December, January through May, and then through the summer. In the summer my office will typically offer three, four-week sessions, one starting the middle of May and lasting through the middle of June, one from mid-June to mid-July, and the third from mid-July to mid-August. The deadlines for submitting applications are:

  • Summer Sessions- March 15th
  • Fall Semester- July 15th
  • Spring Semester- December 1st

These are unpaid internships and interns are responsible for their own housing. My staff will be happy to make housing suggestions. Additionally, my intern coordinator is very willing to work with college professors and interested students to design a specific internship that will fit both the office’s needs and the student’s needs.

Thank you again for your interest. For those interested, please send me a cover letter with a résumé, any references you would like to provide, and the session for which you are applying.

Washington, DC: contact Anna Koch at (202) 225-3605 or send my office an email.

Midland, San Angelo, Llano: contact Patsy Bain at (866) 882-3811 or send my office an email.

My office can assist you in obtaining a greeting from the President. Please call Anna Koch at (202) 225-3605 or email us.

To receive a presidential greeting, you must meet the following criteria:

  • U.S. Citizens Only. The White House will send greetings to United States citizens only, for special occasions as outlined below.
  • Advance Notice Required. Your request must be received six (6) weeks in advance of the event date. We make every effort to honor every request, but we cannot guarantee a greeting if this guideline is not met. (Greetings are generally not sent after the event date, except for wedding congratulations and newborn acknowledgments.)
  • Anniversary Greetings. Anniversary greetings are extended only to those couples who are celebrating their 50th (and subsequent) wedding anniversary.
  • Birthday Greeting. Birthday greetings will be sent only to individuals 80 years of age and above.
  • Other Greetings. A limited number of special occasions other than birthdays and anniversaries exist for which the Greetings Office will send appropriate recognition to United States citizens. These occasions include important events such as:

Wedding (send your request after the event)
Baby's Birth (must be born during the George W. Bush Administration; send request only after baby's birth)
    Eagle Scout Award
    Girl Scout Gold Award

How You Can Help Our Troops
Help our troops call home!

Help Our Troops Call Home: The Department of Defense has authorized the sale and purchase of prepaid calling cards to any individual or organization that wishes to purchase cards for troops who are deployed. The "Help Our Troops Call Home" program is designed to help service members call home from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Armed Services Exchanges operate telephone call centers in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and other countries and aboard ships – anywhere service members are deployed in support of operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. All of these locations stay busy around the clock to keep up communication between deployed troops and their loved ones. The cards available through the “Help Our Troops Call Home” program offer the best value for calls made from the call centers, never expire, and there are no added charges or connection fees.

Sending Gifts to the Troops: Individuals and organizations also can show their support to deployed troops and their families with gift certificates. The “Gift of Groceries” program allows anyone to purchase commissary gift certificates by calling toll free 1 (877) 770-GIFT. The Armed Services Exchanges offer the “Gift From the Homefront” gift certificate for merchandise at these exchange web sites: http://www.aafes.com and http://www.navy-nex.com Gift certificates may be purchased to be mailed to service members and family members or will be distributed to any service member.

Donate Miles to the Troops: Frequent Flier Miles can be donated for wounded and injured service men and women and their families. Please visit www.fisherhouse.org/programs/heroMiles.shtml
