The president and Congress created Social Security in the 1930s to provide Americans with a safety net for retirement, survivors, and disability coverage. As our population continues to age, Social Security faces a significant challenge. As the number of retirees begins to increase, the Social Security Trust Fund cannot afford to serve any function other than that of paying promised benefits to Americans who have come to rely upon this social safety net. I pledge to continue working with my colleagues in a bipartisan manner on legislation that will achieve the objective of putting Social Security on solid footing for generations to come.

Additionally, I am a strong supporter of efforts to ensure quality, patient-centered health care for all Americans, but I am concerned by the comments I have received from constituents in the Third District about the transition to the new Medicare prescription drug benefit program. Please be assured that I will do all that I can to ensure that the Medicare prescription drug benefit represents what seniors need and expect.
