July 21st, 2006 - Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith (R-OR) expressed his disappointment with President George W. Bush’s veto decision today on embryonic stem cell research. The veto followed yesterday’s Senate approval of H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, by a vote of 63-37. Senator Smith is an original co-sponsor of the Senate’s version of this legislation, S. 471.
“Today’s decision marks an unusually tragic first use of this president’s veto pen,” said Senator Smith. “When it is a matter of improving life for the living, I choose to err on the side of hope, healing and health; and I am disappointed that the president did not do the same.”
