SMITH: BUSH MUST RE-EVALUATE POSITION ON STEM CELLS
July 12th, 2006 - Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith (R-OR) called on President George W. Bush to reconsider his veto threat to legislation that would expand stem cell research. Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) announced this morning that a series of stem cell bills will be considered on the U.S. Senate floor next week, including H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. Senator Smith is an original co-sponsor of the Senate’s version of this legislation, S. 471.
“We cannot shackle the hands and minds of scientists with outdated federal regulations on embryonic stem cell research,” Smith said. “Rather, we should be doing everything in our power to support and advance the hopes of all those who are effected by chronic disorders. I urge President Bush re-evaluate his approach to the stem cell debate by considering the critical value of this research that will improve the quality of life for Americans who are suffering from devastating illnesses.”
