SEN. MARTINEZ STATEMENT ON SIGNING OF MILITARY COMMISSIONS ACTOctober 17, 2006 -Washington, DC -U.S. Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) today applauded President Bush’s signing of S. 3930, the Military Commissions Act of 2006. The measure, now law, outlines how to treat and interrogate terrorists in a fair and just manner without compromising intelligence sources and methods. Senator Martinez said: “We must remember the detainees this law affects are terrorists engaged in an ongoing war against the United States. These terrorists will now be tried in military commissions that afford a fair and reliable prosecution consistent with our national security interests. “This law protects the integrity of U.S. intelligence and the methods used for gathering it. It ensures the safety of soldiers in the field, and our citizens at home. This sets a proper balance between two important American values: security and liberty.”
