Congressional Land Trust Caucus

In June 2005, Congressman Jim Gerlach organized the formation of the House Congressional Land Trust Caucus. The group organized with the intention of educating Members of Congress and their staffs on the importance of land trusts in preserving open space, protecting the environment and strengthening communities.

In January 2005, the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation issued a report recommending the dismantling of tax benefits for landowners who voluntarily work with land trusts and conservancies to conserve their land, thus undermining the future of open space preservation efforts. This issue is likely to lead the Caucus' list of priorities as the group moves forward.

"This is a great opportunity to engage in a serious dialogue with my fellow members on a topic of extreme importance to many places throughout the country, including Southeastern Pennsylvania," Congressman Gerlach said.
