Senator Roberts’ Statement on the Capture of Saddam

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence today issued the following statement:

The capture of Saddam Hussein is outstanding news for the Iraqi people, for American and coalition forces, and for free people throughout the entire world. For decades, Saddam terrorized his own people, destabilized the region, and threatened all peaceful nations with his barbaric ambitions. The era of Saddam has finally ended and the people of Iraq now have the chance to achieve stability and embrace freedom.

“Great credit goes to President Bush for his leadership, perseverance, and resolve. In the face of stiff political opposition both abroad and at home, President Bush has demonstrated that history’s great moments are achieved not by those who criticize but by those who take great risks and endure hardships.

“Our intelligence community has endured a great deal of criticism lately. Saddam’s capture is a direct result of unprecedented cooperation and joint effort on the part of our intelligence analysts, operators in the field, and our military. Every day our men and women are living and working in difficult and often dangerous circumstances. They deserve a great deal of credit and our gratitude.

“The capture of Saddam is a monumental step forward, but we have a long way to go. Today’s car bombing in Baghdad demonstrates that there remains a small group of terrorists that are determined to stand between the Iraqi people and a nation free from fear. If these desperate few have learned anything today, they should learn that we will persevere and that there is no hole into which they can crawl to avoid the justice that is due them.”
