GUTIERREZ HELPS SECURE MORE THAN $87 MILLION FOR CHICAGO PROJECTS

CHICAGO -- U.S. Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.) announced today that he secured more than $87 million in federal funding for important Chicago projects.

"It is rewarding to see that all of our hard work and dedication has culminated in the allocation of necessary and crucial resources for projects that have the potential to vastly improve so many people's lives," Gutierrez said. "In addition, the funding from this bill will help build and better our city through improved infrastructure, better training for police officers and easier access to technology and health care."

The funding, included in the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill, will allot vital resources for initiatives in Illinois' Fourth Congressional District and throughout Chicago. The omnibus is a collection of several major spending bills.

Through the Congressman's hard work, he was able to secure the following:

  • $85 million as part of the Full Funding Agreement for the Douglas Branch Reconstruction Project along the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) Blue Line.

  • $600,000 for Chicago Public Schools to develop Child-Parent Center Programs. The initiative will target children and parents who are in need of before- and after-school initiatives.

  • 250,000 for the Latino Development and Technology Center (LDTAC) in Humboldt Park. The LDTAC is designed to bridge the technological divide in minority communities through training, education initiatives and employment opportunities.

  • $194,000 for improvements and restoration of the Chicago Park District's Davis Square Park. The Chicago Park District provides a host of free cultural and educational programs and sports activities at Davis Square Park. However, due to severe storm damage, many of the park's amenities, including its field house, were destroyed. This funding will be used to make essential repairs to the park.

  • Working with Rep. William Lipinski (D-Ill.) and Sen. Durbin, Rep. Gutierrez helped secure $539,500 for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The funding will be used to assist in the construction of a new facility for operations and programs, which will enable the depository to distribute as much as 80 million pounds of food to a network of more than 600 organizations.

  • $50,000 for the Illinois Police Academy to fund new weapons inventory software. The existing software, which was developed more than 20 years ago, is no longer viable for information that needs to be tracked. The funding will be used to help purchase a new system, allowing the Academy to address weapons and training in one program, as well as to dramatically simplify and modernize the task of weapons and training accounting.

  • The Congressman also worked with his colleagues to get $4.8 million for the National Council of La Raza's (NCLR) Hope Fund to improve housing and community facilities. The Hope Fund is a partnership between NCLR, its affiliates and private-sector investors.  The goal of the fund is to build a national system of financial products geared toward serving the capital needs of the Hispanic community.ing with Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Gutierrez secured $550,000 for Alivio Medical Center. The funding will be used to provide bilingual and bicultural health care to uninsured and underinsured women in the predominantly Latino communities of lower west and near southwest Chicago, as well as for facilities construction and enhancement.
