Congressional Art Competition

I invite you or your school to participate in "An Artistic Discovery," the 25th Annual Nationwide Congressional High School Art Competition, sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus.

The purpose of this competition is to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of our youth.  The winning artwork from each Congressional District is annually exhibited in the Cannon tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol building.  The winner will also receive two roundtrip tickets, from our sponsor Southwest Airlines, to travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

I believe art plays an integral role in our neighborhoods and schools.  With your help, this competition will spotlight our youth's achievements.  The 4th Congressional District is lucky to be enriched with theaters, galleries, murals and sculptures that vitalize our public spaces and remind us of the importance of art in our lives.  I ask you to support and promote the importance of art in our neighborhood by participating in the 4th Congressional District Art Competition.

The guidelines for the artwork and competition are as follows:

  • The competition is open only to high school students who reside in the 4th Congressional District.
  • The entry must be an original concept.
  • The entry must be two-dimensional, no larger than 32 inches-by-32 inches framed and no more than 4 inches in   depth.  Larger entries will not be accepted.

The entry must be in one of the following categories:

  • Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
  • Collages: must be two-dimensional
  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolors, etc.
  • Prints: Lithographs, silk-screens, block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photography

Students may select their own theme for the competition.

NOTE:  An entry that is reproduced from an existing photo, painting, or any other work is a violation of U.S. Copyright Laws and competition rules, and will not be accepted.

Art entries are due no later than noon on Monday April 24, 2006, at 3455 W. North Avenue or 1310 W. 18th St in Chicago.  To ensure proper enrollment in this competition, the attached entry form must accompany the art entry.

An exhibition of all submissions will be open to the public Friday, April 28, 2006, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Casa Michoacana, 1638 S. Blue Island St., in Chicago.

"An Artistic Discovery" continues to be a wonderful way for students throughout our community to share their talent and artistic vision.  I strongly urge you to participate in this important event.

If you have any questions, please contact me or my Congressional Aides, Noemi Galvez, at (773) 384-1655 or Teresa Reyes at (312) 666-3882.  I thank you for your interest in "An Artistic Discovery."

Sincerely,

Luis V. Gutierrez
